RTA’s Public Transport Agency is always keen on applying the best & most effective practices to improve its business processes, in keeping with a multi-faceted drive espoused by the RTA.
This includes the environmental aspect where the Agency is pursuing a well-rehearsed policy in the field of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) which is compatible with the plans of the UAE government as regards boosting environmental conservation, fostering healthy & safe climate, and thrusting the sustained development process.
The array of integrated services provided by the Agency is therefore continually aligned with the latest HSE standards applicable worldwide.
Eisa Abdul Rahman Al Dosary, CEO of RTA Public Transport Agency, said: “The Agency is committed to operating land & marine mass transit means in an environmentally-responsible manner throughout its facilities including depots, bus stations and buildings. It is also committed to observing effective management, and curbing any risks that might have negative bearing on the environment.”
“Among the clear indicators illustrating the adoption of sustainable environment concept in the business of the Public Transport Agency is that it uses the best type of fuel to power its public bus fleet; which is fitted with the world’s best engines using fuel that contains only 50 PPM of (the environmental pollutant) sulfur, which is by far superior to the type of fuel used for powering buses & trucks across the UAE which has a sulfur content of 500 PPM. Moreover, several abras used to lift marine transit modes commuters are powered by natural gas (CNG); which is considered environment-friendly,” he continued.
“The Agency has also replaced and beefed up the public bus fleet by buses which are compatible with Euro IV – Euro V specifications, and is seeking to maximize the coefficient of opacity of emissions from its public buses (K Value) to keep it at one-tenth of the maximum permissible rates of diesel-powered buses operated in the UAE. It also uses engines fitted with the Selective Catalyst Reduction (CSR) technology for curbing the emissions of nitrogen oxides, and other engines fitted with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology to minimize the emissions of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.
“Initiatives related to this sort of clean fuel contributed to a reduction in the total emissions of carbon dioxide ranging from 20 to 45% and achieved as much as 90% reduction in both Particulate Matter (PM) and Sulfur Oxide (SOx). Meanwhile, the replacement of public buses and types of engines used led to a 60% reduction in the emissions of carbon monoxide & hydrocarbons, 70% reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx), and 85% in PM.
“The Agency is committed to RTA vision & mission, striking a balance between the economic & social responsibilities, and doing its level best to sustain the improvements made in the environmental performance; which has been culminated in obtaining the ISO 140001 Certification in the Environmental Management from a specialist international entity in this line of industry. “The Agency has also deployed 7 abras powered by electricity in tourist areas, used solar energy in lighting two Water Taxi stations, and used LED lights, which result in huge power savings, in all Water Taxi stations.
“The Agency, as well as all its contractors and service providers, comply with the environmental requirements & legislations. It has also succeeded in integrating all business planning and decision-making phases, and is currently working on enhancing the efficiency of using natural resources, reducing the consumption of water & electricity, besides preventing or minimizing the generation of wastes, refuses and noises to the least practicable levels. It also assigns special attention to curbing air-borne emissions generated by land & marine public transit systems, raising the awareness of environmental issues among employees at various levels, and carrying out periodic surveillance & audits to ensure compliance with the environmental legislations as well as RTA’s policies and requirements in order to realize the environmental objectives mapped out for the Public Transport Agency,” continued Al Dosary.
The CEO of Public Transport Agency concluded to say that the work team of the Agency, including the CEO, Directors, Managers and all employees, are collectively responsible for taking an active role in uplifting the environmental record of the Agency, and implementing its environmental policies in order to ensure the sustainable development of the land & marine public transport sector in Dubai Emirate.
